Detailed
Narrative Description of Project:
Small Holder Support Project (SHSP) is designed to target
poverty alleviation in the parts of southern-western Bangladesh
following holistic approach. The approach has unique methodology
that integrates LGED to improve rural physical structures
including rural road networks, Bank and NGOs to supply and
manage cash flow during the needs of farmers and DAE as
lead organization to transfer agricultural technologies
to the project. The output and success of the project mostly
depend upon the convergence of activities in target population,
area and organizations. Sustainability of groups depends
upon the processes of group formation. Group formation processes
could be rightly followed if the NGO has its strength in
the locality. GHARONI take responsibility of the area/ location
where it has its own establishment.
The main goal is to improve the living condition including
the nutritional status of the target group members through
diversifying as well as intensifying on-and off-farm activities.
The NGO is to form groups of 15-25 (averaged 20) members
of different categories of poor farm families. The categories
are likely to be Marginal and landless Group members having
an operational land holding between 0.20-0.60 hectare including
homestead and small Farmers Group members having operational
land between 0.60-1.0 hectare including homestead. Group
graduation by social mobilization and flow of micro-finance
as per need/demand is the role of NGOs in the project. The
role of DAE is to provide technology training to the GO/NGO
staff as well as the beneficiaries of the project. The modern
agricultural production technologies are to be demonstrated
in the NGO led groups by the DAE in collaboration with other
GO and private sectors. Development of rural infrastructure
is a part to support easy movement of commodities for better
marketing.

Detailed Narrative Description
of Project:
The Integrated Area Development Project is basically a poverty
alleviation project being implemented in Kotalipara Upazila
of Gopalpur district with the support of Islamic Development
Bank (IDB) and GOB. The poverty alleviation is targeted
through agricultural development by transferring improved
technologies among the resource poor (marginal and small
farmers) farm families. An integrated rural development
approach is designed involving LGED, Ngo, Bank and DAE as
lead agency. The group –led extension approaches are
to be done using partner NGOs to inject micro-credit to
achieve accelerated adoption processes. Rural infrastructures
mostly rural communication facilities as well as facilitate
marketing of agricultural commodities to overcome seasonal
glut for vegetables, which is very common in the present
days.
The main goal is to improve the living condition including
the nutritional status of the target group members through
diversifying as well as intensifying on-and off-farm activities.
The NGOs is to be formed groups of 15-25 (averaged 20) members
of different categories of poor farm families. The categories
are likely to be Marginal and landless Groups (up to 0.60
ha landholdings), and small Farmers Groups (0.60-1.0 ha
landholdings). Group graduation by social mobilization and
flow of micro-finance as per need/demand is the role of
NGOs in the project. The role of DAE is to provide technology
training to the GO/NGO staff as well as the beneficiaries
of the project. The modern agricultural production technologies
are to be demonstrated in the NGO led groups by the DAE
in collaboration with other GO and private sectors. Development
of rural infrastructure is a part to support easy movement

The specific objectives of the project
are:
• To enable landless and marginal families to increase
their income and improve their nutrition through agro-based
and other income generating activities and homestead gardening.
• To enable small farmers to intensify and diversity
crop productions as well as purpose other rural enterprises.
• To create employment opportunities It is anticipated
that there are two vital tasks to be done by the GHARONI
i.e.
(a) group formation (both MLG and SFG) and development (graduated)
through discussion, group meeting and pertaining appropriate
training courses
(b) rural savings and credit management to Income Generating
Activities (IGA) for MLGs and to agricultural enterprises
development for SFGs. |

Detailed Narrative Description
of Project:
Poultry production in most developing countries is based
mainly on scavenging backyard systems. This low input/output
practice has been a traditional component of small farms
all over the world for centuries and will continue to be
so in the future. For example, it has been estimated that
80% of the poultry population in Africa is found in this
traditional production system, which contributes up to 90%
of poultry products in some countries. Approximately 20%
of the protein consumed in developing countries originate
from poultry. In spite of the importance of backyard poultry,
few activities have been initiated in this field in order
to improve the output.
Previously, projects were typically implemented by governments
through the established extension service systems; today,
many projects work through village groups supported by local
NGOs and with government agencies in facilitating role.
Examples of this are the Smallholder Livestock Development
Project, SLDP (1993-98) in Bangladesh supported by an IFAD
loan and a Danida grant, and the Participatory Livestock
Development Project, PLDP (1998-2002), also in Bangladesh,
supported by an ADB loan and a Danida grant. A third Danida-funded
project, SLDP 2, is soon to start. The design of these projects
is based on two previous projects in Bangladesh: the Vulnerable
Group Development Programme, coordinated by WFP, and the
Rural Development Programme, implemented by the Bangladesh
NGO BRAC. Approximately two million smallholders have been
established and are in operation within these projects.
Overall objective
The overall objective of the Network for Smallholder Poultry
Development is poverty alleviation and improved welfare
of the moderate and extreme poor in rural areas.
The immediate objectives
The immediate objectives of the Network are to support sustainable
improvement of the traditional free-range poultry production
in the smallholder sector of developing countries.
An important objective is to help to develop local research
capacity - not merely through collaboration with the Danish
Network but also by involving partner institutions and researchers
in the research process at all levels. It is imperative
that the research networks created promote communication
between the village and the laboratory and among the local
research institutions themselves.
Another objective is to explore the varieties of traditional
poultry management within a given region and to improve
the theoretical and practical understanding of the forces,
which shape specific strategies. |

Detailed Narrative Description
of Project:
Literacy for All is a human right and essential for human
resources development. The constitution of the country has
clearly spelt the kind of the basic education the country
must have and it enjoins upon the government to impart such
education within a given time frame. As a signatory to the
World Conference on EFA held in Jomtien in March 1990. World
Summit for Children held in New York in September, 1990,
EFA Summit of Nine High Population Countries held in New
Delhi, in 1993, the Government of Bangladesh is committed
to achieve 62% literacy by the year 2000 AD and total literacy
for all by 2006.
The purpose of post literacy and continuing education project
is (as the name suggests) to provide post literacy and continuing
education. In the post literacy phase the objective is to
consolidate, upgrade the acquired skills of neo literate
and in the continuing phase the objective is to provide
them with skill training. In the post literacy phase, the
beneficiaries will have opportunities for further strengthening
of the acquired literacy skills and would have an exposure
on the opportunities of skill training so that they can
choose the skill training from the list of available and
suitable skills considering the market demand and supply
situation.
NGOs are envisaged to play a key role as the interface between
the project, and the institutions involved in the project,
and the stakeholder communities concerned. They would provide
long-term support to communities that are of key importance
in dealing with the management of human resources. NGOs
also have an important role to play in creating linkages
between the learner/ center and the existing credit mechanisms
and resource-user groups and technical training providing
institutions.
The goal of the project is to capacitate the disadvantaged
community female sections for facing the problems that exist
in their surroundings. The project is implemented by an
implementing organization. GHARONI is only providing support
for monitoring the project activities and it’s effectiveness
in the community. The poor community people who have no
literacy are the main target group of the project. The project
will provide educational resources and local need based
training for developing their skill on specific trade that
they can earn themselves.
